Canon EOS 500D Photo/Video Results

Having just got my hands on the relatively new Canon EOS 500D, I thought it only right that I should put it to use. All the shots taken on this page are with the supplied Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS kit lens.

I have tried to take a variety of shots depicting different styles of photography. Point and shoot for example in FULL AUTO mode and of course the various other modes as well, including some still life.

For good measure I will include some shots taken indoors at night from when I first took the camera out of it's box and messed around taking pictures of almost anything, including the cat!. Later, I shall include some videos using the different settings and also display them on this web page. So do keep coming back periodically whilst I get more and more use from the camera.

1st impressions out of the box are positive. The camera looks and feels well made although it does feel a little light in the hands. This may or not be a problem depending on the person, but if you have larger hands it is a bit of a squeeze to get all your digits securely around the grip. My solution to this is to buy the dedicated battery grip which will give ample gripping space and weigh the camera down a bit for improved stability. I won't however, be going into any technical details regarding the camera as there a plenty of in depth reviews etc out there on the internet already. All I am interested in for this exercise, is what the photos look like and how easy it can be to simply play with it and get some great looking shots, good enough to display on this website!

Picture Quality

New CMOS 15.1mp sensor seems divine.

So far so good, picture quality is second to none and perfectly acceptable for any enthusiast serious about getting great results. When you look at these photos with the supplied software in the RAW format, you soon notice how big these pictures are and then just how good the quality actually is.

This camera also has a great ISO sensitivity. Great for low light shots and for being creative. The next shot here was just a test. I took it by simply resting the camera on a wall and turning the flash off. Apart from the street lights, it was almost completely dark.

So, in my opinion, if you want a great camera without spending semi-professional money, then this camera will seriously impress you!

Great in Portrait Mode too...

So, what are you waiting for? In my opinion it's fantastic value for money, takes great photo's, has a massive range of lens from Canons EF and EF-S ranges and...takes some pretty good video as well.

Excellent Video Results...

Video is an excellent feature for a DSLR, especially when it sports Full HD at 1920 x 1080. However, don't expect true camcorder results. It is a little tricky to focus and operate but once you get the hang of it, it's actually not too bad or hard to use. For best results on this camera at least, you should choose the next resolution down in order to get a smoother picture. At 1280 x 720 it will film at 30fps whereas at 1080, it only manages 20fps. This makes it too jerky for walking around with it and/or moving objects. At 1280 it is almost just as clear but so much smoother. Plus for best results you should buy the HDMI cable (not supplied) to view the movies in the correct resolution on your HD television.

I will add some video footage in the near future.

Conclusion: Bear in mind that I do not consider my self to be either a professional photographer or indeed qualified to offer a comparative technical review of this product. What I do aim to do is to simply tell anyone interested in buying a new DSLR that this camera should tick almost every box on anyone's wish list.
